Coking also a primary target in China’s pollution battle
Other than the steel industry, coking industry has been a primary target in Beijing’s battle against air pollution too for 2018, as China’s central government has intensified the efforts in the aspect to improve the air quality in the core Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
On top of the frequent and ad hoc inspections and curtailing on the coking capacities in the core bases such as Shanxi and Hebei, China will be expanding the restriction on steel mills and coking plants to the Fenwei Plain and Yangtze River Delta from 2017’s “2+26” cities in winter months of November-March, and by doing so, Shaanxi, and Jiangsu have been enveloped into the scope of surveillance besides Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, and Shandong.
This is part of Beijing’s efforts to materialize the “Blue Sky Safeguard” plan over 2018-2020 on realizing the necessity to expand and extend the curtailing efforts, and in China, Shanxi, Hebei, and Shaanxi are the top three coking bases, accounting for around 40% of the country’s total 430 million tonnes/year coking output in 2017.
