The notice identified three steelmakers – namely HBIS Tangsteel, Huaxi Steel and Guoyi Special Steel – as needing to observe significant cuts. Over August 18-21, Tangsteel’s works in Kaiping is only permitted to keep one sinter plant in operation during the period while Huaxi in Luannan and Guoyi Special in Guye can only operate two sintering plants each among the total of seven they own.
All remaining steel mills located in the above districts and counties were requested to trim their sintering operations to 50% of operative capacity over the same period.
Prior to this, steel mills in the above areas only needed to restrict their operative sintering capacity by 20%-50% in line with the curbs that have already been in place for the local steel industry beginning August 1.
In addition, coke plants in Tangshan were also requested to suspend coal loading and onloading of coke between 18:00 on August 18 and 12:00 on August 19 and from 18:00 on August 20 until 8:00 on August 21, Mysteel understands.
Many steel mills in the city contacted by Mysteel Monday confirmed that they had received the notice and following the government requirements had limited their production. However, how much iron and steel output will be affected by these elevated production curbs is hard to predict, Mysteel Global notes.
Partially supported by this news, on August 19 the price of Q235 150mm square billet in Tangshan, a crucial indicator of local and national steel market sentiment, reversed up by Yuan 20/tonne ($2.8/t) on day to reach Yuan 3,440/t EXW and including the 13% VAT.
