The use of nickel in batteries is expected to grow strongly beyond 2020, and batteries will be the largest growth driver for nickel consumption over the next decade in volume terms, according to Zhao Yingxiang, commodity specialist at Macquarie. She was speaking at the 2021 Mysteel Ni-Cr-Stainless Steel-New Energy Annual Conference in Wuxi city, East China’s Jiangsu province on December 3.
“Nickel will benefit from the strong growth in electric vehicle production and nickel use per battery will increase,” she predicted. The average quantity of nickel per vehicle could grow from 20kg up to 30-50kg by 2025-30, she told delegates at the conference, but warned that the quantity could be determined
