Demand uptick prompts Nippon Steel to restart Kashima BF

Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest integrated steelmaker, has decided to restart another banked blast furnace, announcing on December 4 that a large unit north of Tokyo will be restarted in late January to lift hot metal supply in response to improving steel demand from auto manufacturers.
Being brought back online is the No.1 blast furnace in the
Kashima Area of the company’s East Nippon Works in Ibaraki prefecture and which
has a large 5,370 cu metre inner volume. It was banked on April 15 as Nippon
Steel was adjusting output volume following the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan that
