MYSTEEL: China coke supply to rise but stay tight in ‘21

Production of metallurgical coke in China is forecast to grow by 3.2% on year to 478.4 million tonnes in 2021, thanks to the commissioning of new coking capacity. However, the new capacity will struggle to offset the impact of the massive elimination of inefficient capacity last year, with the result that coke supply will stay tight this year, according to Mysteel’s annual forecast.
Building of new capacity to continue, but commissioning seen delayed
This year China will continue to eliminate small-sized and inefficient coking capacity while at the same time, large-sized and technically-advanced capacity will be commissioned, as part of the country’s broader campaign to reduce air pollution.
