Kobe Steel announces start of Algeria Midrex DRI plant


Japanese steelmaker and plant builder Kobe Steel has announced the first successful charge of Hot Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) produced by a new DRI plant constructed in Algeria and supplied by Midrex Technologies, Inc. Kobe’s wholly owned subsidiary in the US, with its consortium partner Paul Wurth S.A based in Luxembourg.
The 2.5 million tonnes/year capacity DRI plant incorporating the Midrex process was built at Algerian Qatari Steel Co (AQS), located about 400km east from the capital, Algiers. AQS melts HDRI in its electric arc furnace (EAF) and plans to produce about 2 million tonnes/year of bars and wire rods, according to Kobe Steel’s release on
