Analysis: China imports 2.4 mln t of steel semis in Q1


China’s steel semis imports totalled 2.35 million tonnes over January-March, up 35.4% on year but down 55.5% on quarter, according to the detailed data from the country’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) that are available to its subscribers.
The on-year surge was partly due to the low base in Q1 2020 when the Chinese industrial and economic activities had been seriously slowed by the COVID-19 outbreak, as known to the market. The on-quarter drop was due to the fact that overseas semis have been losing their pricing competitiveness in the Chinese market
