WSA: Global crude steel output regains 3.6% in 2021
The association's monthly steel output survey among those 64 countries showed that their output accounted for 98% of the world's total steel output in 2021, which settled at 1.95 billion tonnes, Mysteel Global noted from the WSA data.
As for December alone, the 64 surveyed countries saw their steel production decrease by 3% on year to 158.7 million tonnes, the association's data showed.
Last year, China - the world's top steelmaking country - posted an on-year dip of 3% in crude steel output to 1.03 billion tonnes as the country strived to keep its steel output of 2021 lower than 2020, and thus, its contribution to total steel output globally decreased to about 53% from the 56.5% for 2020, Mysteel Global calculated based on the WSA data.
Despite the on-year drop in China's crude steel output, all other top 10 steelmaking countries except Iran produced more steel in 2021 than 2020. For example, India held its position as the world's second-largest steel-producing country, with total output at 118.1 million tonnes, or up 17.8% on year, followed by Japan whose steel output gained by 14.9% on year to 96.3 million tonnes, according to WSA.
