East China’s Shandong province will idle and scrap some 2 million tonnes/year of primary aluminum smelting capacity so that Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering Group, purportedly the world’s largest aluminum smelter, can proceed with plans formalised last month to build a 2 million tonnes/year primary smelter in Southwest China’s Yunnan province. China’s three major copper smelters have reached an agreement on November 20 with Freeport-McMoRan (Freeport), a leading copper mining company in the world on the 2020 copper concentrate treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) at $62/t or a new low since 2013, market sources commented.

Norsk Hydro, Norway’s global aluminum producer, saw its underlying earnings before financial items and tax (EBIT) during Q3 plunge 49% a year-on-year to Norwegian Krone 1,366 million ($141.5), though the company’s production of bauxite, alumina and aluminum largely increased, the company said through an official news release on October 23. The severe drought in Central Chile has led Anglo American to tighten its production guidance for copper for full-year 2019 from 630,000-660,000 tonnes previously to 630,000-650,000 tonnes, according to the global miner’s latest quarterly report released on October 22.
