WEEKLY: China's thermal coal market stabilizes after weeks of decline

Active buying among utilities firms and end users led China's spot thermal coal market to show signs of stabilizing in the latter part of last week (March 3-7), following an almost non-stop price decline that began in early February. However, many participants were cautious about the market rebound, warning that the buying may be short-lived during the typical winter-summer shoulder season, especially at a time when coal oversupply issues still loom large.

After an extended fall on Monday, spot thermal coal prices at northern transfer ports stabilized on Tuesday and finally rebounded on Friday, with the benchmark 5,500 kcal/kg NAR price dipping from Yuan 695/tonne ($95.8/t) to Yuan 690/t before recovering to Yuan 695/t again, on a FOB basis with VAT,
