Liberia shuts down China Union's Bong Mines for environmental breaches

Liberia's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shut down China Union's operations at Bong Mines due to multiple environmental violations, stated Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, the Executive Director of the EPA, during a press briefing on Thursday at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism.

China Union, which runs the large iron ore Bong Mines in Bong County, central Liberia, was found in breach of several environmental laws. These violations included operating without an effluent discharge license, transporting ores via the Bong Mines railway without an environmental mitigation plan, and constructing new processing plants
