Rusal reduces aluminium production due to high alumina prices

UC Rusal of Russia (Rusal), one of the world's top aluminum producers and headquartered in Moscow, will reduce aluminium production by 250,000 tonnes as part of production optimization, the company's press service reported. The reason for the reduction is the record increase in alumina prices.

Currently, Rusal has to buy more than a third of the alumina it needs on international markets at prices set on the stock exchange, which has a significant impact on margins. Since the beginning of 2024, the cost of alumina has doubled to over US$700 per tonne, a record increase.
