According to Mysteel statistics, the total production of nickel pig iron (NPI) in China and Indonesia reached 166,000 tonnes in May 2026, up 1.16% month-on-month. Medium- and high-grade NPI production stood at 160,000 tonnes, up 0.83% month-on-month. From January to May, the total NPI production in China and Indonesia was 789,200 tonnes, down 8.86% year-on-year, of which medium- and high-grade NPI accounted for 761,300 tonnes, down 8.89% year-on-year.
The total NPI production in China and Indonesia is estimated at 163,200 tonnes in June, down 1.74% month-on-month; medium- and high-grade NPI is expected to reach 157,100 tonnes, down 1.80% month-on-month.
China:
China's NPI production reached 27,200 tonnes in May, up 11.80% month-on-month. Medium- and high-grade NPI production stood at 21,200 tonnes, up 12.08% month-on-month; low-grade NPI production was 6,100 tonnes, up 10.82% month-on-month. From January to May, China's total NPI production was 116,500 tonnes, up 1.60% year-on-year, of which medium- and high-grade NPI accounted for 88,500 tonnes, up 5.11% year-on-year.
China's NPI production is estimated at 27,500 tonnes in June 2026, up 0.79% month-on-month; medium- and high-grade NPI is expected to reach 21,400 tonnes, up 1.02% month-on-month; low-grade NPI is estimated at 6,100 tonnes, unchanged month-on-month.
Indonesia:
As of May 2026, Mysteel surveyed 58 nickel smelting projects in Indonesia, with a total of 274 BF/EF/RKEF production lines in operation. No new lines were added during the month. Indonesia's NPI production in May 2026 was 138,800 tonnes, down 0.69% month-on-month. From January to May, Indonesia's total NPI production was 672,700 tonnes, down 10.46% year-on-year.
Indonesia's NPI production is estimated at 135,700 tonnes in June, down 2.23% month-on-month.
