Minsur, Peru's main tin mining company, decided in mid-January to temporarily suspend mining operations at its San Rafael tin mine which is located in the south of Puno, due to the outbreak of anti-government protests.
The supply of tin ore is tight currently, according to Mysteel's survey. While, the San Rafael tin mine, as the main tin raw material source in Peru, suspended production may lead to further compression of supply.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Peru, one of the major tin ore reserving countries in the world, reserved 0.15 million tonnes of tin ore in 2021, accounting for 3% of the global reserves. Meanwhile, its output was 30,000 tonnes in 2021, accounting for 10% of the global output. Wherein, the tin ore output of Minsur- San Rafael increased by 4.5% year on year to 6,942 metal tonnes in the first half of 2022.
