Worrying signs in Japan's steel trade in October

Steel trade statistics released by the Japan Iron & Steel Federation (JISF) last Friday relating to ordinary steel exports and imports during October suggest 2024 will not be remembered by Japanese steelmakers and their traders as an especially good year for both. Ordinary steel exports during the year to December 31 look set to fall by 1 million tonnes from last year's result, while imports could be 330,000 tonnes higher, Mysteel Global notes.

According to the trade results released by the JISF on October 29, the export volume of ordinary steel that month fell by 9.6% year-on-year to some 1.7 million tonnes, declining for the third consecutive month and making for the lowest so far this year, as tough international market conditions
