Domestic iron ore concentrate prices fall amid softer outlook

After a brief rebound following the unexpected China-U.S. trade truce, China's domestic iron ore concentrate prices fell again in May. The decline was mainly driven by reduced hot metal output and pessimistic market expectations as the steel sector entered its off-season. However, the overall drop was partially mitigated by lower supply, particularly a structural shortage of low-titanium resources. By May 30, the Mysteel 66% Fe Tangshan Concentrates Price Index had fallen by 1.61% on-month, settling at Yuan 917/tonne.

Domestic concentrate supply declined in May, with average daily output falling by 2.1% on-month to 0.71 million tonnes. The decrease was mainly concentrated in North China, where environmental inspections prompted the suspension of operations at several mines, resulting in a daily production loss of approximately 7,500 tonnes.
