DAILY: China's thermal coal prices plummet as inventories swell

China's domestic thermal coal prices extended a sharp decline on December 19, as coal inventories at northern ports swelled further, highlighting ongoing fundamental weakness in the market.

On Friday, Mysteel assessed the benchmark 5,500 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at Yuan 716/tonne ($101.7/t), down Yuan 7/t from a day earlier. The 5,000 kcal/kg and 4,500 kcal/kg NAR grades each fell Yuan 8/t on day to Yuan 614/t and Yuan 514/t, respectively, FOB with VAT. The benchmark price has
