The nickel ore market diverged from downstream trends yesterday. Influenced by overseas macroeconomic news, SHFE nickel futures rose sharply, driving a subsequent increase in downstream NPI prices. However, nickel ore offers, supported by previously high FOB transaction costs, remained firm at elevated CIF levels. It was reported that CIF transaction prices for Philippine 1.4% grade ore to Indonesia reached US $58-$60/wmt, with offers for similar-grade material at Chinese ports rising to comparable levels. Spot trading for refined nickel remained generally subdued yesterday. Supported by Jinchuan's ex-factory price and reduced offerings from traders, spot premiums for Jinchuan material rose again. Premiums for most other electrowinning nickel brands also mostly edged higher. The availability of low-priced GEM resources increased slightly, causing the overall trading focus for spot premiums/discounts to shift marginally lower.
