GACC: China's June thermal coal imports surge 30% YoY

China's imports of thermal coal rebounded sharply in June, rising 30.1% year on year and 38.7% from May to 29.55 million tonnes, as a slump in domestic coal output forced coastal utilities to turn to the seaborne market, data from the General Administration of Customs (GACC) showed July 21.

In June, thermal coal represented 69.1% of China's total coal imports of 42.78 million tonnes, while coking coal made up 28.5%, or 12.18 million tonnes, with anthracite accounting for the remaining 2.4% and totaling 1.04 million tonnes. In value terms, June's thermal coal imports were worth $2.34 billion, soaring 65.1%
