MONTHLY: Turning point for China's coking coal market just ahead?

Having retreated throughout most of July, Mysteel's benchmark price for Chinese coking coal will likely continue tracking south over the next two weeks, but toward the end of this month, the chances are that the market will experience a timely change in fortunes, suggests Mysteel's latest monthly report on the commodity. The determinant will be whether China's steel sector improves sufficiently to lift the markets for steelmaking inputs including coking coal and metallurgical coke, it says.

On July 31, Mysteel Coking Coal Index (MCCI), which tracks coking coal prices nationwide in China, stood at Yuan 1,686.5/tonne ($249.8/t) including the 13% VAT, down Yuan 25.8/t from June 30, according to Mysteel's assessment.
