During July 31-August 6, 2026, prices across China's methanol industry chain moved broadly lower as softer macroeconomic sentiment weighed on both inland and port methanol markets. Thermal coal supply recovered modestly, while end users maintained purchases on an as-needed basis. Coal prices edged lower but remained at elevated levels, providing continued cost-side support for methanol. Port methanol inventories increased slightly during the week. However, typhoon-related shipping restrictions at the Yangtze River estuary are expected to significantly reduce imported cargo arrivals in the coming week. Several methanol units resumed operations, while operating rates at olefin units showed only limited improvement. Downstream demand remained weak, leaving the methanol market with a relatively loose supply-demand balance.
