Corn prices pressured by old-new crop transition, all eyes on weather triggers

Domestic corn prices extended their decline since July, with both futures and spot markets remaining under sustained pressure. The spots supply for old-crop corn continued to reduce, while subdued downstream demand and growing competition from substitutes capped any upside. The market currently finds itself caught in a "strong reality, weak expectations" dynamic.

On the supply side, the farmers have largely cleared their old-crop corn inventories, concentrating stocks in traders' hands. Rising temperatures have increased storage risks, and coupled with capital carrying costs, traders' resolve to hold prices has steadily softened, accelerating their pace of active selling.

Northeast, the traders' inventories have been higher than a year ago, which were estimated at roughly 30 million tonnes. Spot corn prices at northern China ports have trended downward in choppy trade, while the DCE C2609 futures contract continued to test support near the Yuan 2,260/tonne level.

Pressure extended well beyond old-crop supplies. Alternative feed ingredients steadily eroded corn's market share. That is, germinated wheat has been increasingly finding its way into feed rations at competitive prices, and re-sold aged rice originally for captive use has been Yuan 40-60/tonne cheaper than corn, further squeezing corn's feed formulation share.

Overall market sentiment has remained subdued, offering little in the way of price support. Feed mills have stayed focused on cost containment, limiting purchases to essential needs and keeping inventories lean to hedge against price volatility. Meanwhile, the corn deep-processing factories have entered their seasonal maintenance period, with weak margins forcing operating rates lower on a phased basis. Downstream procurement stays cautious, and trading activity has been quiet, lacking any driver for proactive replenishment.

The current loose corn supply-demand balance is unlikely to reverse quickly. However, market focus has already shifted to new-crop corn production expectations. Northeast spring corn is now in its critical pollination and grain-filling window.

Since early summer, excessive rainfall and limited sunshine have slowed crop development in some areas, raising risks of water logging, lodging, and disease in low-lying corn fields. Weather conditions during the peak flood season will be decisive for new-crop corn yields and quality. Should persistent extreme weather hit key production zones, the market is likely to price in a weather premium swiftly. If no major weather stress occurs, combined with stable-to-slightly-higher planted acreage, bumper harvest expectations will continue to constrain any meaningful price recovery.

The corn market is expected to remain under pressure through early August, as old-crop selling pressure coincides with the arrival of early-maturing spring corn, creating overlapping supply. A turning point hinges on two key variables: (1) whether adverse weather in Northeast production areas worsens, triggering downward yield revisions, and (2) the pace of improvement in livestock breeding margins, which could eventually support feed demand recovery.
