WEEKLY SUMMARY: China's steelmaking raw mat prices largely stable

Imported iron ore prices in China held largely stable across spot and futures markets during August 17-21, as meagre profit margins among steelmakers still dented their production interests, curbing their appetite for iron ore. Over the same period, spot metallurgical coke prices in the domestic market also remained steady, but coke futures strengthened and some coke firms proposed to raise their coke selling prices for the first time since July amid elevated coal costs.

Operations among Chinese blast-furnace (BF) steelmakers dropped again last week due to their expanding losses on steel sales. During August 14-20, the average capacity utilization rate among the 247 BF steel producers under Mysteel's tracking edged down by 0.19 percentage point on week to 89.25%. Iron ore: On August 21,
