DAILY: China's thermal coal prices edge higher on cost support

China's thermal coal prices at northern transfer ports edged up on August 24, though market participants remained cautious about the near-term direction, as the rebound was driven by cost support rather than any demand-side recovery.

On Monday, Mysteel assessed 5,500 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at northern ports at Yuan 861/tonne ($127.1/t) FOB with VAT, up Yuan 1/t from last Friday. The 5,000 kcal/kg NAR grade rose Yuan 1/t to Yuan 771/t and the 4,500 kcal/kg NAR grade climbed Yuan 2/t to Yuan 687/t. At
