Hog prices likely to hold in Yuan 1213/kg range as seasonal demand fades and frozen stocks cap gains
China' s hog market is currently caught in a pronounced tug-of-war, with persistent supply surpluses clashing against lackluster consumption. On the demand side, the market continues to exhibit a familiar pattern, where buying interest emerges on price dips, while upward momentum stalls as prices rise.
More importantly, the traditional seasonal consumption drivers are gradually losing their influence, eroded by long-term demographic changes and evolving dietary preferences. As a result, hog prices are likely to remain range-bound near the bottom, with any potential rebound facing limited upside.
Nevertheless, the low pork prices have, to some extent, spurred a recovery in end-market consumption. According to Mysteel data, as of August 25, 2026, year-to-date average daily slaughter volumes at processing enterprises rose 11.96% year-on-year.
This growth, however, reflects a passive demand response driven primarily by lower prices enticing household purchases and institutional catering, rather than an active consumption upgrade. This dynamic was recently underscored when pork price hikes lagged behind those of live hogs, and processors were forced to cut slaughter volumes as end-user resistance emerged. While consumption may provide a floor for prices, it offers little impetus for sustained upward movement.
In the near term, the September school season is being eyed as a potential bullish catalyst. Centralized procurement by school canteens could lift slaughter volumes by an estimated 5-8 percentage points.
Nevertheless, this is largely a redistribution of existing demand rather than a net increase, and its price-supportive effect is expected to be modest. The likelihood of live hog prices rising above Yuan 12/kg in September remains low. Meanwhile, the traditional cured-meat preparation season in southern China is losing its former significance, as younger generations show declining interest. This year's cured-meat period is likely to deliver a weaker price boost than in prior years, potentially resulting in a "peak season without peak strength".
Another factor weighing on fresh meat prices is the overhang of frozen product inventories. According to Mysteel's data shows that as of the 34th week of 2026 (August 13-20), frozen product storage utilization at slaughtering enterprises stood at 32.56%, up 15 percentage points year-on-year. While overall inventory levels are markedly higher than last year, storage pressure varies across firms due to differing strategies.
Historically, slaughter enterprises would focus on destocking ahead of the Chinese New Year holiday; however, given the bullish outlook for 2027, some may choose to hold back frozen-product inventory. A large-scale, concentrated clearance around the Chinese New Year holiday appears unlikely, and post-holiday frozen-product inventory drawdowns may be limited. That said, certain frozen product releases could occur in the fourth quarter.
Elevated frozen stocks present a latent ceiling on fresh pork prices - whenever hog prices show tentative signs of recovery, the impetus to offload frozen products intensifies, capping fresh meat upside.
In terms of hog price trajectory, the September school opening season may offer only transient emotional support, with Yuan 12/kg remaining a firm ceiling. The November cured-meat stocking period could provide a brief window for hog prices to test Yuan 13/kg, but ample frozen product substitution and limited consumer acceptance suggest significant resistance at that level.
Any hog price peak is likely to be narrow and short-lived. By December, as the cured-meat stimulus fades and some frozen inventory is gradually released, prices may come under renewed downward pressure, potentially approaching cost-support levels. Overall, pork consumption is unlikely to furnish a sustained upward driver, and range-bound volatility is expected to define the second-half hog price outlook.
