Podcast - China LNG market weekly take-away: a typhoon and tighter domestic supply send prices sharply higher
In this week's Mysteel Commodity Flux podcast, we explore why China's LNG prices rose across the plant gate, open market and receiving terminals from August 21 to 27, and how delayed cargoes, higher coal prices, firmer transport demand, shrinking plant inventories and rising landed costs are shaping the near-term outlook.
- China's LNG price index closed just above 5,770 yuan per tonne, close to 2% higher week on week, while the open market price climbed more than 3% to around 6,020 yuan per tonne
- Typhoon disruption delayed ships into Beihai terminal and reduced coastal supply, while higher coal prices pushed some coke-oven-gas-based plants to scale back
- Domestic output rose close to 4.5%, but import arrivals dropped by more than half to roughly 79,000 tonnes, tightening coastal availability
- Total consumption rose about 4%, supported by the "Golden September" seasonal pickup in industrial activity and trucking demand
- Plant inventories fell about 4% to roughly 57,000 tonnes, while Inner Mongolia plant losses narrowed to around 60 yuan per tonne
- China's domestic LNG prices are expected to keep climbing, with the average ex-plant price reaching around 5,700 yuan per tonne and the open market price moving toward 6,100 yuan per tonne
