China's domestic coal market is tightening on both the thermal and coking-coal fronts. On the thermal side, supply constraints have recently sent pithead prices soaring, with some miners raising prices by as much as Yuan 100/t in a single adjustment. This has significantly increased the cost of shipping coal to northern ports, prompting portside prices to rise in tandem.

On the coking-coal side, the squeeze looks different but is no less pronounced. Many coal mines remain shut in Shanxi, while tighter stockpile checks at Ganqimaodu have sharply reduced Mongolian coal inflows.

Meanwhile, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have supported global oil and gas prices to hover high and strengthened bullish sentiment across the coal markets.
