China's lithium carbonate market moved through a "narrow-range consolidation to downside breakdown" pattern in the week ending September 11, 2026. On the spot market, Mysteel assessed China's battery-grade lithium carbonate price at Yuan 135,000/tonne on September 11, down about Yuan 8,000/tonne or roughly 5.6% from Yuan 143,000/tonne on September 7. September 11 alone saw a single-day decline of Yuan 7,850/tonne, the largest daily drop of the week.
Futures weakened in tandem, with the most-traded LC2701 contract at Guangzhou Futures Exchange (GFEX) briefly breaking below the Yuan 130,000/tonne threshold on September 11 and touching an intraday low of Yuan 128,080/tonne, before the prices stabilized and recovered somewhat around Yuan 130,000/tonne.

The sharp decline last week was essentially the concentrated materialization of multiple bearish expectations rather than a cliff-edge contraction in demand. The non-ferrous complex came under broad pressure the previous trading day amid macro headwinds, and the pullback in risk appetite exerted systemic pressure on lithium carbonate valuations.
On the supply side, lithium ore shipments from Australia and Africa, along with China's port arrivals, concentrated in the period, pushing domestic port lithium ore inventories to about 284,000 tonnes as of September 10, up roughly 52,000 tonnes week-on-week. This reinforced the consensus that forward feedstock supply is shifting "from tight to loose" and markedly weakened the "good material shortage" narrative. On Friday, 6% spodumene concentrate prices fell to about Yuan 1,895/tonne (Australian SC6, CIF), signaling weakening ore price resilience.
Demand-side disruptions also weighed on sentiment. Market rumors circulated that leading cell makers had revised down production schedules due to feedstock constraints and cut ternary orders, while a major player in utility-scale storage and integration also reportedly lowered its September and full-year schedules, further amplifying bearish sentiment.
Despite the futures breakdown, the lithium carbonate market fundamentals did not collapse, with structural indicators still pointing to "strong reality".
Mysteel's data showed that September 11 saw a single-day lithium carbonate trading volume of 8,195 tonnes, of which 7,865 tonnes were sold to downstream buyers. The basis strengthened further, with industrial-grade lithium carbonate spot availability further tightening.
In addition, with the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Holiday approaching, strengthening basis has increased downstream willingness to take delivery via GFEX warrants. However, though the basis has continued to strengthen, it is not yet sufficient to trigger rapid, large-scale warrant cancellation. To accelerate the digestion of roughly 50,000 warrants, the basis would need to strengthen to a level where low-quality cargo commands a premium of about Yuan 2,000/tonne.
Structural divergence is now evident. Some GFEX registered warehouses have prioritized the delivery of high-quality cargoes, while the lower-quality ones will queue or divert to other warehouses. Several thousand tonnes of new warrant registrations are expected before month-end.
In addition, China's lithium carbonate inventories continued to draw down last week but at a slower pace. Mysteel's lithium carbonate inventory based on 207 sampled players fell about 3.3% WoW. Structurally, smelters and traders destocked while downstream built inventories modestly for the upcoming holidays.
Separately, a peer's adjustment to its inventory methodology revised the absolute figure from about 76,000 tonnes under the old methodology to about 164,000 tonnes, triggering a sharp short-term market reaction. Yet, it should be clarified that this change stems mainly from sample expansion and classification adjustments, not the addition of nearly 100,000 tonnes of physical inventory in a single week.
On the demand side, September LFP cathode production is estimated at 604,800 tonnes, up 5.05% MoM. Toll-processing orders have increased, and new capacities continue to ramp up, with smooth ramping likely to support even higher schedules. Key areas to watch going forward are the pace of LFP capacity release and feedstock supply security on the iron phosphate side.
China's ternary cathode material production is estimated at 90,400 tonnes in September, down 1.74% MoM. Weaker-than-expected sales of range-extended high-end electric vehicle (EV) models have directly suppressed demand for ternary cells, leaving ternary with rigid demand only in high-end pure-battery EVs and export models.
Overall, driven jointly by downstream peak-season demand and stockpiling for the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, lithium carbonate spot trading sentiment has been relatively favorable recently.
In the near term, the lithium carbonate market is expected to see continued tug-of-war at current low, featuring fast declines but slow gains.
Downside support comes from peak-season rigid demand, continued destocking, and warrant digestion expectations, all signs of strong reality, with support at the Yuan 120,000/tonne lithium slag extraction cost. Upside is capped by rising mine-side supply, supply recovery, and weak expectations.
A sustained rally would require further materialization of strong reality, such as renewed acceleration in inventory destocking or a stronger basis driving warrant digestion, to open room, with resistance at the Yuan 143,000/tonne, the rolling 30-day external ore procurement pricing cost.
Key areas to watch going forward include the mine side, where overseas lithium ore shipment pace, arrival volumes, and port inventory changes matter; the demand side, where the strength of downstream peak-season demand realization is critical, particularly the sustainability of energy storage and LFP production schedules and whether order cuts emerge; and the futures market, where basis trends and GFEX warrant changes should be tracked, following warrant digestion progress amid delivery quality divergence.
