NEVs: China’s drive towards 2030 carbon peak accelerates


China’s central government is promoting initiatives to reduce carbon emissions following Chinese premier Xi Jinping’s surprise pledge delivered last September that the country will reach peak carbon by 2030 and realize carbon neutral by 2060. All relevant industries including the automobile sector are being pressed to support the goal and for China’s car makers, the national policy meshes nicely with its existing endeavours to lift the proportion of new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in total car sales.
Beijing’s efforts boosting NEV sales take effect, low carbon as a stimulus NEV sales in China’s auto market began recording positive on-year growth since last July, a trend that has continued into 2021 as sales of these ‘greener’ vehicles over January-February this year surged 3.2 times on year to 289,000 units,
