China's electric-arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers are still grappling with high costs, as the surge in prices of graphite electrodes and the tightened supply of domestic steel scrap are keeping the overall costs of their raw materials at very high levels, according to a Beijing-based analyst on May 15.

China March scrap steel imports off 10.5% on month
China's imports of scrap steel in March declined 10.5% or 20,000 tonnes on month to 170,000 tonnes, according to the latest data from China's General Administration of Customs released on April 25. The total was down 19.3% or by 40,000 tonnes on year.
