WEEKLY: Aust., Brazilian iron ore shipments rise 9% WoW
During the latest survey period, Australian iron ore shipped worldwide from the country's 10 ports reversed from the previous week's slump and increased by a large 3.5 million tonnes or 22% on week to 19.1 million tonnes.
Of that, the volume sent to the country's largest iron ore consumer China rose to 16.3 million tonnes, gaining 2.4 million tonnes or 16.8% on week.
As for the top three iron ore miners in Australia, both Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) ramped up their iron ore shipments to China last week, Mysteel's survey showed.
Specifically, Rio Tinto's volume jumped 1.4 million tonnes or 35.5% on week to reach 5.4 million tonnes after a sharp decline in the prior week, while FMG's tonnage rose for the fourth straight week by another 411,000 tonnes or 10.7% on week to 4.3 million tonnes.
In contrast, shipments from BHP retreated after the prior week's rise and lost 504,000 tonnes or 10.9% on week to 4.1 million tonnes during the survey week.
On the other hand, Brazilian iron ore shipped to global destinations dropped by a significant 1.5 million tonnes or 23.1% on week to reach 4.9 million tonnes after the previous week's gain. And the volume sent from Vale fell by 778,000 tonnes or 17.2% on week to 3.8 million tonnes.
As for the week over March 25-31, one berth at Australia's Port Hedland has been scheduled to undergo maintenance works for 24 hours, but it may not affect the country's iron ore shipments, according to Mysteel's tracking.
