HBA thermal coal prices rose slightly to $191.6/tonne in July 2023

Indonesian government's benchmark thermal coal price HBA for July 2023 increased by US$0.34 MoM to US$191.6/tonne.

On July 20, 2023, the price of the ICE Newcastle Coal July futures contract stagnated at $132/t. The August contract rose $1.60/t to $140/t. The September contract was up $1.80/t at $141.95/t. The ICE Rotterdam July futures contract has risen by $1.75/t to $109.75/t. The August contract was up $5.60/t at $111.6/t. The September contract was up $5.85/t at $111.35/t.

Indonesia now has difficulties in raising coal production to meet its rising energy demand. Of the 87 coal mines auctioned off to private companies in the past three years for Indonesia's energy self-sufficiency plan, only four are operational, while the rest are awaiting financing.
