The two storage tanks in the first phase of Shenzhen LNG Terminal have officially started the water pressure tests recently, marking the completion of the first phase, according to OilChem's survey.
The project, located at Dapeng New Area, Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province, is an emergency reserve project, which comprises dock engineering and terminal construction.
The dock engineering includes a loading/unloading berth for LNG vessels with storage capacities of 80,000-267,000 cubic meters, and a loading berth with storage capacities of 5,000-20,000 cubic meters.
The terminal has an annual handling capacity of 3 million tonnes. Separately, the phase I contains two 200,000 cubic meters LNG storage tanks with a gasification capacity of 30 million cubic meters per day. The phase II will accommodate two 270,000 cubic meters LNG storage tanks with a gasification capacity of 42 million cubic meters per day. The maximum gas storage capacity will reach 580 million cubic meters when both completed.
After the first phase is put into operation in 2024, it will mainly focus on PNG transportation rather than LNG sales for the time being.
Guangdong's natural gas consumption has shown an uptrend in recent years except the slight decline in 2022 due to the epidemic, with strong demand in power generation and industrial sectors. OilChem expects that its natural gas consumption growth may exceed 5% in 2023.

More than half of the natural gas supply in Guangdong comes from imported LNG. Currently, there are 6 LNG terminals in Guangdong that have been put into operation, including PipeChina's Yuedong LNG Terminal and Shenzhen Diefu LNG Terminal, CNOOC's Zhuhai Jinwan LNG Terminal, JOVO Dongguan LNG Terminal, Sinobenny LNG Terminal and Dapeng LNG Terminal. The LNG handling capacity of the six terminals has reached 18.4 million t/y, with a total of 11.4 million t/y in Shenzhen.
According to OilChem's data, Guangdong's LNG import volume in 2023 was approximately 20.91 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 12.74%, including the arrivals for the trial operation of Guangzhou Gas's new Nansha LNG terminal.
