Exceeding the 10 million t/y scale, the butadiene capacity is projected to reach approximately 10.09 million t/y by 2028 in China, bolstered by fast capacity expansion, compared to the total capacity of 6,416,000 t/y by the end of 2023.

Geographically, the concentration of northern China's new butadiene capacities will be most pronounced in Shandong, Tianjin and Northeast China, while that in southern China will mainly be in Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Zhejiang, etc.

The commencement of 250,000 t/y newly-added capacity in East China and North China is anticipated to elevate the butadiene capacity in Q2 2024. Shandong Jincheng Petrochemical Group plans to put its 100,000 t/y unit into production on May 10, and the 150,000 t/y unit of Sinopec INEOS (Tianjin) Petrochemicals will come on stream in the middle of the year.
