ASEAN member states mainly include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, which have the world's largest economy. The ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE) was established on January 1st, 1999, in order to supports the Senior Officials on Energy in reviewing and implementing various energy cooperation activities and supports engagement with Dialogue Partner and International Organizations (DPs/IOs).
Secondly, he introduced the energy development plan of the ASEAN Center for Energy. Thirdly, he explained the importance of developing clean energy technology in terms of its advantages and future predictions. Finally, Beni Suryadi proposed the ASEAN mineral cooperation initiative from a development perspective.
2.Prof. Irwandy Arif: Introduction to the Current Situation and Related Policies of Mineral Resources in Indonesia
Firstly, Prof. Irwandy Arif introduced Indonesia's abundant mineral resources, including various metal minerals and coal reserves and production. Secondly, he introduced the current condition of Indonesia's domestic steel industry. Later, he introduced the national steel industry products trade. Finally, Prof Irwandy Arif has put forward relevant suggestions for the future development of Indonesia's steel industry, including but not limited to introducing advanced equipment and improving capacity utilization through import controls.
3.Mohammad Faizal ST, MM: INDONESIA NICKEL DOWNSTREAM INDUSTRY update
Mohammad Faizal ST, MM pointed out that Indonesia is currently developing natural resources towards products with higher added value. For example, the development of nickel ore from natural resources towards manufacturing EV batteries can increase added value. Minerals such as nickel, bauxite, and copper need to be processed and exported.
Mr. Mohammad Faizal ST, MM further proposed that the Indonesian government hopes to support the priority development of the EV battery and stainless steel industry, striving to become the world's best EV battery production country and also the world's top stainless steel production country by 2040.
Next, he introduced the position of China and Indonesia in the global supply chain of battery packs and stainless steel, and continuously innovate to enhance their trade position. Indonesia's nickel reserves are mainly distributed in 79 locations in Southeast Sulawesi, accounting for 35%, 76 locations in the central part of Sulawesi Island, accounting for 17%, and 79 locations in North Maluku accounting for 28%.
Finally, Mr. Mohammad Faizal ST, MM provided an outlook on the downstream nickel industry in Indonesia. Two plants under construction (IBI, LG Energy), planned to be operational as of 2024 with a total production capacity of 377 GWh. At the same time, the construction of supporting facilities such as airports and highways for downstream nickel exploration will be carried out. And build a stainless steel derivative industry with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes to meet Indonesia's domestic and export needs.
4.Daniil Pitirimov: Global Nickel Market Update
The speech mainly includes 5 aspects:
1) Introduction to Norilsk Nickel.
2) The trend changes in global nickel supply.
3) The carbon emissions from nickel production in Indonesia have limited the adaptability of the automotive industry.
4) Nickel consumption is driven by the stainless steel alloy and battery industries.
5) The purchase of green nickel by battery manufacturers will gain more market recognition.
5.Muchtazar, M.S: ESG and Sustainability in the Nickel Sector: A Case Study of Nickel Industries Limited
Firstly, Muchtazar introduced Nickel Industries Limited (NIC) as a leading investment company in the nickel processing industry, which has formed partnerships with global nickel enterprises with low capital intensity and high profit margins, such as Tsingshan Group, the world's largest stainless steel producer. The company's goal is to become a world leading global nickel company, manufacturing an unparalleled diversified, low-cost, and sustainable nickel product platform based on global best practice mining standards.
Secondly, Muchtazar proposed that Indonesia's nickel industry has implemented investment incentives from three aspects: environment, social responsibility, and corporate governance, including reducing carbon emissions and stimulating investment environment improvement to create an excellent local community atmosphere. The goal is a 50% reduction in carbon intensity by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2050.
In terms of social incentives, NIC will devote itself to the long-term construction of the investment environment for the nickel industry from five key factors: education, health, real income and economic independence, infrastructure, and social culture.
Finally, Muchtazar briefly listed some recent business achievements and awards received. According to the Green PROPER rating from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the Hengjaya mine has become an important asset of the Indonesian government and a leading example of sustainable mining in Indonesia. It won the Most Promising Transformation Award and TrenAsia ESG in 2023.
6.Meidy Katrin Lengkey: Policy update and the overview of Indonesian Nickel industry, Pricing benchmark of Indonesian Nickel ores
Firstly, Ms. Meidy briefly introduces the development history of APNI and the reserves and distribution of various key mineral resources in Indonesia. Among them, the focus was on the status of nickel resources in Indonesia and the progress of nickel production capacity expansion in Indonesia. She said that with additional capacity coming from construction phase, within next 1-2 years, estimated nickel ore consumption will be 290 million tonnes.
Secondly, she explained the nickel ore processing process and consumption in Indonesia, and disclosed the number of nickel iron production lines and smelters in Indonesia as of January this year. She also provided a brief review of Indonesia's nickel production and consumption in 2023.
Next, Ms. Meidy explained and analyzed Indonesia's latest nickel price index, nickel ore benchmark price, as well as Indonesia's nickel content and related impurities. And proposed the concept of implementing SIMNARA with nickel: "The implementation of the final validation process for raw material effectiveness will be carried out at the input point of the smelter."
Finally, Meidy explained to everyone the ecological layout and development advantages of Indonesia's downstream new energy industry. In addition, she raised three major risks to the sustainable development of Indonesia's nickel industry in the future, and proposed ESG related policies and measures to address these risks.
7.Kai Hasenclever: Global Stainless Steel Market Outlook
Firstly, Kai Hasenclever introduced the World Stainless Steel Association. Starting from the association's assistance to the stainless steel market, industry, and enterprise employees, he elaborated on the advantages of the World Stainless Steel Association. He also introduced various stainless steel projects jointly collaborated by Ni Institute, IMOA, ICDA, and the World Stainless Steel Association, among which stainless steel pipeline projects covering multiple countries have achieved significant results. Subsequently, he analyzed the current macroeconomic situation related to stainless steel based on multiple data such as the national economic barometer, business and consumer confidence index, and comprehensive leading indicators, and based on the proposed analysis content, provided an outlook for the stainless steel market. Finally, Kai Hasenclever briefly explained the global flow and direction of stainless steel, analyzed the operation mode of the stainless steel market, and expressed high expectations for the future of the stainless steel market.
