China LNG bunkering market faces both opportunities and challenges amid global shipping's low-carbon transition

Global shipping emission regulations are tightening, positioning LNG as a core fuel for the industry's low-carbon transition. As of May 2026, LNG-powered vessels reached 1,655 units globally, accounting for nearly 60% of the alternative-fuel fleet, with tonnage share rising to 7.90%. However, LNG bunker prices remained volatile in 2026, with the Rotterdam LNG-VLSFO spread exceeding $200/t in May, dampening new demand.
