According to the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI), nickel ore absorption reached 120.6 million tonnes during January–June 2026, equivalent to 46.2% of the 2026 production quota of 260–270 million tonnes set out in the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB).
APNI Secretary-General Meidy noted that there are currently 422 active nickel mining business permits (IUPs) supplying 79 nickel processing and refining facilities, or smelters. These 79 smelters consist of 55 RKEF pyrometallurgy facilities, 10 HPAL hydrometallurgy plants, 8 nickel matte producers, and 6 integrated stainless steel smelters.
She pointed out that if all 79 smelters were to operate at full capacity, their annual nickel ore demand could reach 415 million tonnes.
"Domestic ore consumption as of June 2026 stood at approximately 120.06 million tonnes, or about 46.2% of the approved quota. Meanwhile, if all 79 downstream facilities operate at full capacity, annual demand is estimated to reach around 415 million tonnes," Meidy said in an interview on Monday (July 20, 2026).
