On Tuesday, August 11, Samsung SDI announced that it had signed an agreement with General Motors (GM) to jointly develop next-generation prismatic battery cells for potential use in future electric vehicles (EVs).
Under the agreement, the two companies will conduct joint research and development on prismatic batteries designed to deliver high energy density and fast-charging capabilities, further deepening their collaboration in the EV space.
Separately, as part of the transaction, Samsung SDI acquired GM's entire 49.99% stake in Synergy Cells, the joint venture the two companies had established in Indiana, and assumed full ownership and operational control of the entity. Samsung SDI had previously held the remaining 50.01% stake in the joint venture.
