Unpacking EU's additional tariffs on China-made battery electric vehicles

In October 2023, European Commission formally initiated an ex-officio anti-subsidy investigation on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for passengers originating in China. On 20 August 2024, the Commission disclosed to interested parties the draft decision to impose definitive countervailing duties on imports of BEVs from China. The duties will be in force for a period of five year, ranging from 9% to 36.3%. The definitive measures will be imposed by 4 November, 2024.

SUMMARY The tariff hike is one of the latest moves by the EU to target China's new energy vehicle industry in recent years, after the EU has pushed up the cost of China's new energy vehicle exports through the introduction of restrictions e.g., the Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the
