WEEKLY: China's thermal coal plunges on rising supply, weak demand

China's thermal coal market softened further over the past week (December 8-12), as ample supply at northern ports continued to outpace lackluster demand, pressuring coal prices.

As of Friday, Mysteel's assessment for the benchmark 5,500 kcal/kg thermal coal at China's northern ports reached Yuan 757/tonne ($107.3/t), lower by Yuan 39/t from a week ago. The assessments for 5,000 kcal/kg and 4,500 kcal/kg NAR grades reached Yuan 655/t and Yuan 556/t, down Yuan 42/t and Yuan
