WEEKLY: China's thermal coal prices drift lower as buying stays muted

China's thermal coal market edged lower last week (January 19-23), as ample supply and bearish sentiment continued to outweigh a weather-driven pickup in power demand, keeping both sellers and buyers in a cautious standoff.

As of Friday, Mysteel assessed the 5,500 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at Yuan 693/tonne ($96.6/t) FOB northern ports with VAT, down Yuan 11/t from a week ago. Meanwhile, 5,000 kcal/kg and 4,500 kcal/kg NAR grades declined Yuan 12/t and Yuan 11/t, respectively, to Yuan 606/t and Yuan 515/t. Although a
