DAILY: Pre-holiday buys, tight supply lift China's steam coal prices higher

China's spot thermal coal prices set a firm tone at the beginning of this week, with prices rising more sharply amid the tightening supply and strong restocking moves ahead of the Labour Day holiday (May 1-5).

On April 27, Mysteel assessed 5,500 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at Yuan 784/tonne ($114.8/t) FOB northern ports with VAT, up Yuan 6/t from the last session. The 5,000 kcal/kg and 4,500 kcal/kg NAR grades also rose Yuan 6/t each to Yuan 699/t and Yuan 607/t, respectively. Spot prices moved higher
