FEATURE: China's coated steel coil makers struggle as their sector suffers

The past six months have been tough on producers of coated steel strips and coils in China, especially small producers chasing overseas customers, as trade cases targeting their flat steel exports are rising while spiking freight rates amid the Mid-East conflict are impacting their profit margins. One of those being battered by the storm is Guangyi New Materials Co, a maker of color-coated and galvalume sheets and coils in Northeast China’s Shandong province.

"The situation is grim," a company official admitted frankly. "Many makers in this area have had to slash their labour force just to survive," he told Mysteel Global. Founded in 2020, Guangyi New Materials is one of many coated sheet producers in Shandong's Boxing County Economic Development Zone in Binzhou
