China's hog capacity reduction poised to accelerate in Sep
By the end of Q2 2026, the national sow herd had fallen to 37.80 million head, just 300,000 head above the Ministry of Agriculture's revised target of 37.50 million head (scheduled for end-September), or 0.8% higher. This is the third downward revision of the official sow reserve benchmark in three years, from 41 million in 2021 to 39 million in 2024, and further to 37.50 million in 2026. As sow productivity continues to improve and pork demand stabilizes, inefficient capacity has been progressively weeded out.
The August acceleration is evident in data from Mysteel's 208-sample survey, which shows a 2.9% month-on-month decline in sow inventories. By comparison, the cumulative reduction in the first half was only 3.55%. In July, the decline was partly driven by typhoons, flooding, and sporadic ASF outbreaks in southern and southwestern regions, leading to passive reductions.
In August, policy implementation became a key catalyst, with leading hog producers accelerating the voluntary culling of low-yield sows and gilts, while restrictions on pregnant sow sales further intensified short-term capacity concentration. This proactive culling reflects both a bearish outlook and the financial strain from earlier expansion.
Data from 25 listed pig companies in H1 show total liabilities of RMB 422.82 billion, with an average debt ratio above 64%, and five firms exceeding 80%. Overall, deep losses coupled with policy tailwinds are expected to yield significant, and likely over-achieved, sow reduction results by end-Q3.
According to Mysteel's survey, national cull sow prices plunged from Yuan 7.7/kg to Yuan 6.8/kg during August 23-29, roughly 60% of standard hog prices, with steeper drops in key regions like Jiangsu, Anhui, and Henan. The concentrated sell-off by major producers flooded the market with multiparous sows, weighing heavily on prices.
In early September, cull sow prices in Henan steadied around Yuan 6.4/kg but rallied sharply to Yuan 8.0/kg by September 6–7, while prices in northeastern region also rebounded above Yuan 7/kg. This rebound, however, appears more corrective than trend-reversing, and the cull-to-fattening hog price discount is unlikely to widen further.
Looking ahead, the August data, accelerated sow reduction and a sharp drop in cull sow prices, signals that capacity adjustment has entered a substantive phase. By end-September, the sow herd is expected to move into the official "green" regulatory range, that is, the Ministry of Agriculture's revised target of 37.50 million head, which will pave the way for a gradual improvement in supply-demand dynamics.
That said, productivity gains and rising industry scale may slow the pace of capacity exit relative to historical norms, requiring deeper cuts to rebalance the market. Efficiency improvements continue to offset sow herd declines, potentially prolonging the rebalancing process. Mysteel will continue to track sow reduction, piglet prices, and consumption trends, awaiting a multi-signal confirmation of a true cyclical reversal.
