China’s Aug coking coal imports recover to 4.7 million t

China’s coking coal imports from all origins in August soared by 24.2% from July to a five-month high of 4.7 million tonnes, mainly underpinned by higher volumes from Mongolia and the U.S., according to recent data from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). Yet despite the on-month surge, the total was nonetheless 34.7% lower on year, due largely to Australia’s absence from China’s coal import market.

During last month alone, the U.S. was the largest supplier of coking coal to China, with some 1.2 million tonnes of coking coal from the country being cleared by Chinese Customs, up 111.5% on month or nearly 16-fold on year. The total was also the highest monthly record since
