According to government data, Peru's copper production reached 208,000 tonnes in August, with a decrease of 1.5% year-on-year, that was the second consecutive month of decline, mainly due to reduced activity in several mines controlled by the Freeport McMoRan Corp and Grupo Mexico.
South American countries produced 1.5 million tonnes of copper in January to August 2022, with a decrease of 0.3% year-on-year, Energy-and-Mines-Ministry pointed out in a report released on last Sunday.
Production at Cerro Verde, a major copper mine owned by Freeport McMoRan Corp and Buenaventura, fell 11.5% in August. Production at the Grupo Mexico south copper mine fell 10.6%.
MMG's Las Bambas Mine resumed operations after a truce with the protest communities. Production resumed in June. But the truce was not agreed upon, which raising fears of potential new future conflicts.
