Steel Production
The crude steel production of 92 major steelmakers in China collected by the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) added up to 824 million tonnes for 2023, higher by 2.9% or 22.9 million tonnes from the preceding year or accounting for 80.8% of the country's total crude steel output at 1.019 billion tonnes last year, Mysteel Global learned from a release on Tuesday by China Metallurgical News, regarded as the voice of the association.

Among the 92 steelmakers, which are also key member mills of the CISA, 41 mills posted on-year falls in crude steel output in the past year, with the aggregate reduction volume reaching 13 million tonnes, while 51 saw on-year gains with their production sum rising by 35.9 million tonnes.

By the volume of crude steel production last year, the top 10 steel mills contributed to 51.16% of the total crude steel output produced among the 92 steelmakers, as against their 51.82% share for 2022, indicating a small dip in the concentration level for the domestic steel industry, according to the release.

The top 10 mills' combined crude steel output increased by 1.6% or 6.4 million tonnes on year in 2023, among which four mills reported on-year declines tallying 3.5 million tonnes in output, while six saw on-year rises at 9.9 million tonnes, the data found.

For the remaining 82 mills, their combined crude steel production increased by 16.5 million tonnes or 4.3% on year last year, according to the new data.

Also, the statistics showed that 22 large steelmakers' annual crude steel output exceeded 10 million tonnes in 2023, and their output together rose by 1.8% or 10.5 million tonnes on year, representing 71.2% of the total output among the 92 major steel mills.
