South China has been ramping up the construction and expansion of LNG terminals recently, with 18.80 million tonnes/year new capacities expected to come on stream in 2024, data from OilChem showed.

There are a total of 28 LNG terminals in operation in China, including 12 in South China, accounting for 42.90% of the country's total, data from OilChem showed. The total LNG terminal capacity in South China is 35.74 million t/y, taking up 27.59% of the country's total of 129.54 million t/y.
These terminals imported a total of 7.19 million tonnes of LNG in the first quarter, ranking first in China and accounting for 38.24% of domestic total.

Upon the completion of the new projects in 2024, the quarterly imports are expected to exceed 10 million tonnes by 2025, which not only meets its own needs but also guarantee the supply in the surrounding areas.
On the other hand, the natural gas consumption in South China, especially in Guangdong, is also among the top, and there is still room for further development in the future.

With the development of new natural gas-fired power plants and the efficient use of natural gas in industrial and household sectors, OilChem expects that the natural gas consumption in Guangdong will reach 8.51 billion cubic meters in the first quarter, an increase of 9.81% from a year ago.
