SMS delivers new VOD system to Baosteel Desheng Stainless

German engineering firm SMS has signed the Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) for a vacuum oxygen decarbonization (VOD) system supplied to Baosteel Desheng Stainless, a subsidiary of Baosteel Group, according to a company release on February 27. The signing took place at Baosteel Engineering's office in Shanghai, Mysteel Global learned.

The VOD system is a key part of Baosteel Desheng's expansion in stainless steel production, designed to enhance capacity and product quality. With an annual processing capability of 417,000 tonnes and a 120-tonne-per-heat capacity, the system effectively removes carbon and impurities, ensuring high-purity steel for industries such as automotive, aerospace, and construction.

The project's completion marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between SMS and Baosteel Engineering and Technology Group. Both teams worked closely to integrate the system into Baosteel Desheng's existing operations while optimizing its performance, according to the release.

"The successful commissioning of the system is already enhancing Baosteel Desheng's production efficiency and product quality," said Li Jiancheng, Project Manager at Baosteel Engineering and Technology Group.

Baosteel Desheng's stainless steel output in 2024 exceeded 3 million tonnes for the first time, reaching a record 3.3 million tonnes - a notable increase of 23.03% from the previous year, Chairman Wang Qingjie stated in a February 11 review of full-year 2024.

Baosteel Desheng's stainless steel production last year accounts for approximately 6% of China's total output, Mysteel's survey showed.
