CONF: India facing future 40 mln t/y scrap shortfall

As India races towards its ambitious target of producing as much as 600 million tonnes of crude steel by 2050, up from 149 million tonnes last year, the percentage share that the country's operators of electric-arc furnaces (EAFs) and induction furnaces (IFs) contribute to the total will remain generally stable but actual demand for feeds such as scrap will roar, says Sachin Shetty, CEO of Pune-based Quesrow Research & Strategy Co. How that demand is met will require efforts by the government, steelmakers and the scrap industry itself, he suggests.
